Food is fuel. It fuels our bodies so we have energy, but food also fuels our minds so we can be excited. Have you ever eaten a tasty but not-so-good-for-you food only to discover you felt sluggish and foggy? Unfortunately, some foods that taste amazing have negative effects on your mind and body. You’ve got to eat better to feel better.

A lot of people don’t make the mind and body connection with their food. They simply eat whatever their heart’s desire and don’t think much about the correlation between how they feel based on what they ate. Some reactions, like heartburn, are obvious and people learn to avoid the foods that cause them pain, but a lot of times people don’t recognize that certain things happen after they eat. Things like:

  • Feeling swollen or bloated
  • Feeling forgetful
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Feeling irritable

These symptoms can be directly attributed to what foods people eat. Choosing better foods helps people feel better. If you’ve been experiencing some of these or other symptoms, you might want to look at your diet and try some new things. Here is a list of options that can improve your diet and your mood, which ultimately revives your enthusiasm.

  • Choose a Mediterranean diet. This diet is consistently considered one of the healthiest lifestyles. Following a Mediterranean diet can reduce brain fog, create energy and stabilize your metabolism.

  • Cut out fast food. Fast foods are high in salt, fat, and sugar. Eating fast foods or other processed foods - especially during the daytime - can zap your energy and make it harder to concentrate and make sharp decisions.

  • Grow some food. If you’ve got the space and the inclination, try growing some healthy foods for your family. Getting the family involved in gardening can help them learn about the varieties of fruits and veggies they are eating and what it takes to be responsible for taking care of a garden.

  • Hit the farmers market. If you don’t have the space or the green thumb to grow your own fruits and veggies try hitting the farmers market. Taking your family to source fresh produce can be a fun activity. Plan a menu around the bounty and enjoy healthy and fresh foods free from preservatives.

You may not have thought about how feeling drained, swollen, and tired all the time was directly linked to what you’re eating, but it might be. Evaluate your diet and consider making some changes that will elevate your health and your enthusiasm.
